Large Dry Card Compass by Bliss & Creighton

This is an especially large dry card, brass bowl, gimbaled compass with a sophisticated gimbaled pivoting mechanism.  It was manufactured before 1853 by Bliss & Creighton who were in business in New York from 1835 to 1853, manufacturing and marketing chronometers and other instruments for navigation use. The sliding wood cover is missing, instead covered with plexiglass to keep dust out of the box.  Diameter of the bowl is 12 inches, the box measures 15 in. x 15 in. x 10 in. It is in very good condition with minor gesso loss to the glazing.
