Shadowbox model of American Clipper “Titan”

A large shadowbox model depicting the Clipper Ship Titan at Sea. Detailed painted background, wooden model with rigging.  Frame, hand carved. Dimensions 48″ x 28″. Circa 1900. She was built in 1855 by Roosevelt & Joyce in New York and was owned by D.G.& W. Bacon of Boston. The Titan was commanded at different times by Captain Oliver Eldridge and J.Henry Sears. Her first voyage was a charter carrying French troops to Crimea, then later made trips to Melbourne and back. In 1857 a gale off Liverpool inflicted severe damage to the hull and masts. The next year she was abandoned at sea.
