SS Tuckanuck Shipyard Photo
Original double photograph of the steamship USS Tuckanuck in original shipyard frame and dated July 4th 1919. A very interesting dockside period photo.
In 1919 Moore Shipbuilding company was a ship repair and shipbuilding company located in Oakland California. It changed its name in 1922 to Moore Dry dock Company. Its shipbuilding capabilities were expanded in the WW11 era, building over 100 ships for the US Navy and merchant marine. The yard was notable for its employment of several thousand African Americans in both skilled and unskilled positions, at a time when they confronted major racial discrimination on the job. Moore Dry Dock Company ceased operations in 1961.
